Here is my drawing final, an illustration from the book "The BFG" by Roald Dahl (The Big Friendly Giant),

This was done in pencil then pastel. I tried the best that I could to photograph it in good lighting and fix the exposure and brightness on the computer but it still doesn't quite look right. Ah well. I think I will do a digitally colored/edited version of it as well. I will also put up the wips of this. I took tons of pictures.

*synopsis of book, tried to give as little away as possible:
a wonderful story about a giant who brings good dreams to children and kidnaps a girl who sees him doing it for fear the world will find out. She is lucky however, because she discovers he is the only nice giant in giant country. All the others go out nightly to EAT children. Sophie (the girl) and the BFG must find a way to stop the Manhugger, Childchewer, Meatdripper, Bloodbottler, Maidmasher etc, from eating more innocent children!

original wonderful cute illustrated cover by Quentin Blake which inspired me along with the book itself

trivia:
Sophie was based off of Roald Dahl's own grandaughter who became: [link]

Oh, WOOOOW, wonderful! This book is so great, though I remember I was scared like hell at the beginning when he's staring in the girl's window... Jesus. :D You're so talented!

WOW - that's pretty dark for a children's book 'Meatdripper' etc, :D but most great childrens books have always been pretty dark, haven't they? What a kindly old gentleman giant you illustrated here. His face is very appealing, and I like the sharp 'old man' nose :aww: Gentle eyes. I really like the coloration of the piece . . . bright pastels with more saturation on the edges of the figures . . . those giants skulking in the BG look appropriately creepy and menacing. the BG details too are remarkable, the clock and bridge . . . awesome composition. I bet the author would love to see this illustration, you really did an excellent job :highfive:

Thankee so much me friend! I worked laboriously on that durn clock. Yes it's pretty dark. Actually Roald Dahl wrote excellent children's books that all had a slightly dark edge:
Matilda, BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, which all were a bit like Dickens for the new generation but his ADULT stories. HOLY COW, they're like Edgar Allen Poe! Sadly, he has passed away recently :(

you can read one of his creepier stories: [link]

Hitchcock adapted one of Dahl's adult stories to an episode from "Alfred Hitchcock presents" called "Lamb to the Slaughter"

:wow:, this is fantastic!! Did you do this with soft pastels? I am utterly amazed, I used them today for the first time and it was a complete mess.. :-)
What size is the original picture?

Thanks so much!! This was one of my first times seriously using them too, and it can be really difficult and intimidating. I was cautious not to go to far with it just cause I was afraid of really screwing up with them. The original size of the picture can be seen here: [link]

working bigger definitely helps, also having a tissue on hand to sweep some of the extra pigment away and blend is good too.
